       work shop’s 4th february & 25th march

We hope everyone had a good new year.  We have two upcoming workshops.  On the 4th of February we will be in Tom Kavanaghs workshop in Clonsast Rathangan, Co. Kildare R51 X298

Our second workshop 25th march is in the Carpentry Store, M7 Business Park, Naas, Co. Kildare. Both workshops will run from 11a.m. to 3p.m.

We will have a number of demonstrations covering many aspects of stick making.

There is a 5 euro cover charge to cover costs of the workshop

The Celtic Stickmakers Club will hold their A.G.M on Saturday 22nd October in the Parish Centre, Portlaoise, Co. Laois at 2p.m. The centre is located on the grounds of the Catholic Church.

                                                                                WORK SHOP  & THE ALL IRELAND STICK MAKING CHAMPIONSHIP

We will be hosting two events on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of October.  The first is a workshop in the Carpentry Store, M7 Business Park, Naas, Co. Kildare.  Paul Daunt will be giving the demonstration, Paul is one of the foremost stick carvers in the UK and we are delighted that he has agreed to travel over to share his expertise.  This event starts at 11a.m. and runs to 3p.m. on Saturday 1st  October.

The All-Ireland Stick making Championship is on 2nd of October in the Scout Hall, 223,229, Bunting Road, Walkinstown, Dublin. D12 V0A4.  Paul Daunt is our judge.  All sticks have to be entered by 11a.m.  This competition is open to all, and includes two novice classes.

  • Horn or antler thumbstick, plain.

  • Wood thumbstick, plain.

  • Horn market stick, ram, cow, or goat.

  • Wood walker or horn walker, one or two piece.

  • Fancy stick, any carved head, wood, horn, or antler.

  • Crook, any horn, including ram, cow, goat, or buffalo.

  3. Ornamental stick, any carved stick, not necessarily practical.

Our next workshop is this coming Saturday 2nd July in the Carpentry Store, Unit D4, M7 Business Park, Newhall, Naas, Co. Kildare, W91 XH68. The workshop will run from 11a.m to 3p.m. The event is open to the public, and all are welcome. There is a 5 euro entrance fee which includes tea, coffee and light refreshments.

We will be covering different aspects of stick making, e.g. joining a handle to a shank, carving birds heads, and pyrography on shanks.

 

The Club have two upcoming events.  The first workshop  will be held Saturday 23th of April in the Irish Fly Fishing and Game Shooting Museum in Barnhill, Attanagh, Co. Laois. postcode R32 EH26 At this workshop we will focus on carving.  We hope to have a number of demonstrations on the day.  We encourage all members to bring some sticks with them and carving tools to take an active part in the workshop.

 

Our second event will take place in Cork at the Lough Scout Hall, The Lough on Saturday 28th May.  This workshop is kindly hosted by our members in Cork.  Both events will run from 11a.m. to 3p.m.

The Celtic Stickmakers Club are hosting a workshop in Tom Kavanagh, Clonsast, Rathangan, Co Kildare, R51 X298 at this workshop we will concentrate on the basics of stick making, primarily stick straightening & dowel making to join sticks

There will be two classes in the competition i . e Carved stick with painted head and Carved stick unpainted ( natural wood ) three entries allowed per class

Overall winner will receive a Crystal Trophy to keep

Winner in each category will receive an engraved hip flask and a choice of sporting books. Runners up will receive a choice of sporting books

Photographs of the winning sticks will be published in the Irish Country Sports and Country Life magazine

Entry will be by sending two photographs of the stick – one front view and one side view to

countrysportsandcountrylife@btinternet.com before the 14th January 2021.
